ENTRY #7: From Paragraph to Essay.

  • Paragraph development by listing:
This kind of paragraph contains a list of different ideas that are connected to one main idea. Moreover, it has a specific structure. First, there are paragraph introducers, a topic introducer, which stablishes the topic discussion, and a topic sentence, which defines and delimits the topic. Next, supporting examples are listed with the aim of connectors. Then, transitions or modulator sentenses are used between differents sets of ideas. Finally, a terminator sentence concludes the idea of the paragraph.

Example:

Relationship between Male and Female in Islam.
Relationship between male and female in Islam is not only so safe but also manageable taking into consideration the fact that it has three reasons. First of all, it just has some opportunities when male and female are able to get interaction; for example, when male and female are studying and when they are doing trade. Second, it has rules in their interaction; for example" they mustn't touch one another and they mustn't make something to make others desire, etc. The last reason is that it has flexibility when they are permitted to touch one another in their interaction. That is when they get a danger in which so long as they don't touch one another for holding someone to help, the danger will make someone dead. In short, relationship between male and female in Islam is managed very well to get safety and happiness in this world and hereafter.

  • Paragraph development by examples:
This kind of paragraph is similar to paragraph development by listing. However, in this one the example sentences closely support the topic sentence.

Example:

Sometimes children must perform important tasks within the family. Children can be of great assistance to their parents and other family members. For example, they may help by cleaning the household, washing dishes, taking care of pets, or through doing other chores. By doing these tasks, children are doing their part in the family and learning how to be responsible and prepare for life. Another example of children performing important tasks is the help they provide the parents while the parents are busy or working; the children might bring the parents something they need or answer the phone while the parents are busy. Children doing chores are helping take stress off their parents even by doing simple tasks such as taking out the trash. A final example is that as children get older, they may do more important tasks for the family, such as baby-sitting siblings, getting groceries, and mowing the lawn. These chores all help the family greatly and teach children valuable life lessons.
